"Gendarmen huggede til, før nogen rigtigt nåede at fatte det. Kniven skar igennem Chuscos lange kappe og Chusco gav et spjæt fra sig. Et øjeblik troede alle, han havde fået kniven i sig. Chusco troede det også selv, indtil han til sin forbløffelse – og lettelse! – opdagede, at det var kappen, som gendarmen havde travlt med at file i. Det forreste stykke af kappen var allerede skåret af, så kanten, der før havde været få centimeter over jorden, nu i stedet flugtede med Chuscos hofteben. Gendarmen filede hidsigt videre. Chusco var en stor mand og kappen var det også. Der lå mange meter tætvævet uld forude og gendarmen svedte, så det sprøjtede. Chusco stod musestille. Kniven var hele tiden faretruende nær og han havde bestemt ikke lyst til at se sin mandfolke-stolthed perforeret. Lacayo havde imidlertid fået nok. Han vendte sig mod den af gendarmerne, der så mest tilforladelig ud – og bad om at få en forklaring. Det fik han. ’I strid med loven. Min kappe ?’ gryntede Chusco og så ned ad sig. Gendarmen var nået hele vejen rundt og det, der var tilbage af kappen – ville med garanti have givet Chuscos østrigske skrædder et slagtilfælde."
